Traditional footwear pattern making is a manual, time-intensive craft. A skilled pattern maker translates a 2D sketch into a 3D pattern through experience, intuition, and iteration. Each prototype cycle takes hours — sometimes days. Errors are discovered only in physical samples.
Orion Studio is Perseus's research initiative to understand whether AI can accelerate and augment this process — without replacing the expertise of the pattern maker.
Orion Studio is a rapid prototype end-to-end system. The AI analyzes the sketch, understands the shoe geometry, proposes a pattern, and enables the pattern maker to verify and refine — all digitally, before any physical material is cut.
The designer uploads a hand-drawn or digital sketch of the shoe. Orion Studio analyzes the image and identifies the product components.
The system works with a 3D last (shoe form) — either pre-flattened or processed in real-time — to understand the three-dimensional geometry of the design.
AI generates a pattern proposal that respects the original sketch proportions and applies correct modelleria rules for the identified shoe type.
The generated pattern is wrapped back onto the 3D form for visual verification. The pattern maker can see exactly how the design will look in three dimensions.
Interactive parametric controls allow the pattern maker to apply their expertise — adjusting seam allowances, ease, and proportions with millimetric precision.
The final pattern is exported as a multilayer DXF file, ready for nesting, cutting, and physical prototyping. Lead time: minutes, not hours.
Computer vision identifies shoe components, silhouette, and design intent from hand-drawn or digital sketches.
Algorithmic UV flattening of curved 3D last surfaces into accurate 2D pattern pieces, respecting material stretch and grain.
Generative AI proposes pattern engineering solutions that respect the original sketch while applying correct modelleria rules.
Interactive millimetric controls allow pattern makers to apply their expertise and refine seam allowances, ease, and proportions.
